The Apa River is an important waterway that flows through two countries in South America: Paraguay and Brazil. It is known by different names depending on the language, such as Río Apa in Spanish and Rio Apa in Portuguese. This river plays a key role in the geography of the region.
The Apa River is a branch, or tributary, of the Paraguay River. The Paraguay River itself is a tributary of the much larger Paraná River. This means the Apa River's waters eventually join the Paraguay River, which then flows into the Paraná River, and finally reaches the Atlantic Ocean.

Where Does the Apa River Start?
The Apa River begins its journey in the Amambai Mountains. These mountains are located in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. From there, the river flows west, marking a natural boundary between two nations.
The River as a Border
A significant part of the Apa River forms the border between Paraguay and Brazil. This border section starts near two cities that are very close to each other but in different countries: Bella Vista Norte in Paraguay and Bela Vista in Brazil. The river acts as a natural line, separating the two countries.
What Rivers Flow into the Apa?
Many smaller rivers and streams flow into the Apa River, adding to its size and strength. These smaller waterways are called tributaries. Most of the important tributaries join the Apa River from its right side.
Main Tributaries of the Apa River
Some of the most notable rivers that feed into the Apa include:
- Arroyo Estrella
- Pirapucu River
- Caracol River
- Perdido River
These last three rivers – the Pirapucu, Caracol, and Perdido – all flow from an important natural area called the Serra da Bodoquena National Park. This park is known for its beautiful landscapes and diverse wildlife. The water from these rivers helps support the ecosystems along the Apa River.
