Aparna Sen is a famous Indian film director, screenwriter, and actress. She is especially known for her amazing work in Bengali cinema.

Aparna Sen has won many awards for her acting and filmmaking. These include nine National Film Awards, six Filmfare Awards East, and thirteen Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards. The Government of India also gave her the Padma Shri award. This is one of the highest awards a civilian can receive in India.

Early Life and Education

Aparna Sen was born on October 25, 1945, in Kolkata, India. Her family came from a place called Cox's Bazar, which is now in Bangladesh. Her father, Chidananda Dasgupta, was a well-known film critic and filmmaker. Her mother, Supriya Dasgupta, designed costumes for films. She even won an award for her work on a film called Amodini.

Aparna Sen is also related to the famous Bengali poet Jibanananda Das. She grew up in Hazaribagh and Kolkata. She went to Modern High School for Girls in Kolkata. Later, she studied English at Presidency College, but she did not finish her degree there.

Aparna Sen's Career Journey

Becoming an Actor

Aparna Sen started her journey in entertainment when she was just fifteen years old. A famous photographer, Brian Brake, took her picture for his "Monsoon" series. This photo even appeared on the cover of Life magazine!

She made her first movie appearance at age 16. This was in the 1961 film Teen Kanya (meaning Three Daughters). The film was directed by Satyajit Ray, who was a close friend of her father. She acted in several other films by Satyajit Ray, including Jana Aranya and Pikoo.

In 1965, she acted in Akash Kusum, a film by Mrinal Sen. Aparna Sen became a very important part of the Bengali film industry. She played lead roles in popular films like Basanta Bilap (1973) and Memsaheb (1972). She also acted in some Hindi films, such as Imaan Dharam (1977) and Ek Din Achanak (1989).

In 2009, she acted with Sharmila Tagore and Rahul Bose in the Bengali film Antaheen. This film won four National Film Awards. Later, in 2019, she appeared in other Bengali films like Bohomaan and Basu Poribar.

Directing Films

In 2009, Aparna Sen announced her next Bengali film, Iti Mrinalini. She starred in it herself, along with Konkona Sen Sharma (her daughter) and others. This was the first time she worked with another writer for a film. The screenplay for Iti Mrinalini was actually an assignment from a film school!

In 2013, her film Goynar Baksho (The Jewellery Box) was released. This movie showed the lives of three generations of women and their connection to a box of jewels. It was very popular and received great reviews. After that, in 2015, she directed Arshinagar, which was a modern version of Romeo and Juliet.

In 2017, her English film Sonata came out. This movie was based on a play by Mahesh Elkunchwar. It explored the lives of three middle-aged unmarried friends. Aparna Sen, Shabana Azmi, and Lillete Dubey played these friends. Her filmmaking style has been greatly influenced by Tapan Sinha.

Aparna Sen has received many important awards for her work in cinema:

  • Padma Shri – This is India's fourth highest civilian award, given to her in 1987.
  • National Film Award for Best Direction for 36 Chowringhee Lane in 1981.
  • National Film Award for Best Feature Film in English for 36 Chowringhee Lane in 1981.
  • National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali for Paroma in 1984.
  • National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali for Yugant in 1995.
  • National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali for Paromitar Ek Din in 2000.
  • National Film Award for Best Direction for Mr. and Mrs. Iyer in 2002.
  • Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration for Mr. and Mrs. Iyer in 2002.
  • National Film Award for Best Screenplay for Mr. and Mrs. Iyer in 2002.
  • National Film Award for Best Feature Film in English for 15 Park Avenue in 2005.
  • She has also won several Filmfare Awards East for Best Actress and Best Director.

  • She received Kalakar Awards for Best Actress (Stage) and Best Director.
  • In 2022, she received the Filmfare Awards East Life Achievement Award.

Other Contributions and Honours

Aparna Sen has also been a judge at many film festivals around the world. For example, she was a jury member at the 16th Moscow International Film Festival in 1989. In 2008, she was chosen to be part of the International Jury for the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

From 1986 to 2005, Aparna Sen was the editor of Sananda. This was a popular Bengali women's magazine. She also worked as Creative Director for a TV channel called Kolkata TV. In 2011, she became the editor of another magazine called Paroma.

In 1987, the President of India, Giani Zail Singh, gave her the Padma Shri award. This was to honor her great contributions to Indian cinema. She has also received several lifetime achievement awards for her amazing work.
