Aparna Sen (born Aparna Dasgupta on October 25, 1945) is an Indian film director, screenwriter, and actress. She is famous for her work in Bengali cinema. She has won many awards for her acting and filmmaking. These include nine National Film Awards and six Filmfare Awards East.

For her amazing work in the arts, the Government of India gave her the Padma Shri. This is the fourth-highest award a citizen can receive in India.

Early Life and School

Sen was born into a Bengali family in Kolkata. Her father, Chidananda Dasgupta, was a famous film critic and filmmaker. Her mother, Supriya Dasgupta, was a costume designer. She even won a National Film Award for her work. Sen is also the niece of the well-known Bengali poet Jibanananda Das.

She went to Modern High School for Girls in Kolkata. Later, she studied English at Presidency College but did not finish her degree.

Career in Movies

Aparna Sen's journey into the world of film and entertainment began when she was just fifteen years old.

Starting as an Actress

Sen's first movie role was at age 16. She played Mrinmoyee in the 1961 film Teen Kanya (which means Three Daughters). The movie was directed by the legendary Satyajit Ray, who was a good friend of her father. She later worked with Ray in other films.

In 1965, she acted in the movie Akash Kusum. She became an important part of the Bengali film industry. She starred in popular movies like Basanta Bilap (1973) and Memsaheb (1972). She also appeared in some Hindi films.

In 2009, Sen acted in the Bengali film Antaheen. The film was a big success and won four National Film Awards.

Becoming a Director

In 1981, Sen directed her first movie, 36 Chowringhee Lane. The film was a huge success with critics. It won Sen her first National Film Award for Best Direction. This was a major achievement for a first-time director.

Over the years, she directed many more acclaimed films.

  • Iti Mrinalini (2009): In this film, she acted alongside her daughter, Konkona Sen Sharma. It was the first time a screenplay from an Indian film school was turned into a major movie.
  • Goynar Baksho (2013): This film, meaning The Jewellery Box, tells the story of three generations of women and a special box of jewels. It was very popular with audiences.
  • Arshinagar (2015): This movie was her version of the classic story Romeo and Juliet.
  • Sonata (2017): An English film about three middle-aged friends, played by Sen, Shabana Azmi, and Lillete Dubey.
  • The ... (2021): Her third Hindi film, starring her daughter Konkona. The film is a powerful drama that explores a difficult subject. It was nominated for a major award at the 26th Busan International Film Festival.
