Apollodorus of Carystus facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Apollodorus was an important Greek writer from a place called Carystus in Euboea. He lived a long, long time ago, between 300 and 260 BC. He was famous for writing funny plays called "New Comedy" in Athens.

It's important not to confuse him with another famous writer named Apollodorus of Gela, who lived a bit earlier. Our Apollodorus of Carystus wrote 47 plays and won awards for five of them! Later, a Roman writer named Terence even used two of Apollodorus's plays, Hekyra and Epidikazomenos, as inspiration for his own plays.

Known Play Titles

We know the names of many of Apollodorus's plays, even if we only have small parts (called 'fragments') of them today. These fragments are like tiny pieces of a puzzle that tell us a little about the plays.

Here are some of the plays we know were written by Apollodorus of Carystus:

  • Amphiareus ("Amphiaraus")
  • Anteuergeton ("Man Who Returns a Kindness")
  • Apokarterountes ("People Starving Themselves to Death")
  • Apoleipousa ("The Woman Who Leaves")
  • Grammateidiopoios ("Maker of Writing Tablets")
  • Diabolos ("The Accuser")
  • Hekyra ("The Mother-In-Law")
  • Ennea ("Nine")

  • Proikizomene ("The Woman with a Dowry") or Himatiopolis ("The Female Clothes-Seller")
  • Sphattomene ("The Woman Being Slaughtered")

Other Possible Plays

There are also nine other play titles that are simply credited to "Apollodorus." We don't know for sure if these were written by Apollodorus of Carystus or the older Apollodorus of Gela.

Here are those titles:

  • Adelphoi ("Brothers")
  • Aphanizomenos ("The Disappearing Man")
  • Galatai ("The Galatians")
  • Diamartanon ("The Man Who Is Failing Utterly")
  • Kitharodos ("The Citharode")
