Appetite facts for kids
Appetite is simply the feeling of wanting to eat food. It's like your body telling you it's time to fuel up! Both humans and animals have appetite to make sure they eat enough to stay healthy and strong.
Sometimes, people might lose their appetite. This is also called anorexia, but it's important to know this is different from the eating disorder called anorexia nervosa.
Your appetite can change for many reasons. For example, if you are feeling sick, you might not feel like eating much. Certain medicines can also affect how hungry you feel. Even some eating disorders can change a person's appetite.
If someone has a very big appetite, they might eat more than their body needs. This can lead to gaining weight, and sometimes even becoming obese. On the other hand, a small appetite can make someone eat less than they need. This can cause them to lose weight or become malnourished, meaning they don't get enough important nutrients.
Did you know that what you see can also affect how hungry you feel? Some studies suggest that the color red can actually make you feel hungrier! This is why you often see red signs or furniture in restaurants and fast-food places. They want you to feel like eating!
Colors like red and green are often used together, too. These are called complementary colors.
On the flip side, the color blue is thought to have the opposite effect. It might make you feel less hungry.
