Where is Appley House?

Appley House is located at the very edge of Ryde, Isle of Wight. People often admire it because of its beautiful surroundings. There's a lovely wood that grows right down to the sea-shore. This wood looks amazing from the house. It also offers a cool, shady spot during hot summer days.

The History of Appley House

Appley House stands on the site of an older building. An early owner of the property was a man named Boyce, who passed away in 1740. He purchased Appley and retired there.

The house is also close to Appley Towers. This was the home of the William Hutt family. They bought Appley Towers in the 1870s. Appley House itself was the main home for the Hutt family for many years. One person from this family was even a Governor of the Colony of Western Australia.

A brave naval officer, Captain John Hutt, was also part of this family. He was very courageous and sadly passed away while commanding his ship, the Queen. This happened during Lord Howe's famous naval victory on 1 June 1794. Another resident of Appley House was James Hyde, Esq.

Today, Appley House is known as St Cecilia's Abbey. It is a peaceful place where nuns live and pray.
