Aquashicola (pronounced ack-wa-SHIK-la) is a small community in Pennsylvania. It's not a town or city with its own government. Instead, it's part of Lower Towamensing Township in Carbon County. You can find Aquashicola where Little Gap Road and Forest Inn Road meet. It's located north of the Aquashicola Creek and just east of a town called Palmerton.

History of Aquashicola

The name Aquashicola comes from an old Native American word. It means "Where we fish with the bush nets." This name tells us about how people used to fish in the area long ago.

From Millport to Aquashicola

Originally, this community was called Millport. However, postal workers changed the name to Aquashicola. They did this to avoid confusion with another place named Millport in Potter County, Pennsylvania.

Early Buildings and Businesses

In 1806, a man named George Ziegenfuss Sr. built a grist-mill here. A grist-mill is a place where grain is ground into flour. This mill was very important for the community. It stayed in use for a long time, finally closing in 1930.

Later, in 1830, a tannery was built along the Aquashicola Creek. A tannery is a place where animal hides are turned into leather. This tannery was a key business for the area. Sadly, it was destroyed by a fire in 1874.

Churches in the Community

Over the years, different churches were formed in Aquashicola. An Evangelical Church was started in 1844. Later, in 1866, the United Methodist Church was formed. These churches became important gathering places for the people living in the community.
