Ara (drink) facts for kids
Ara, also called Arag, is a special traditional drink from the country of Bhutan. It is made from different grains like barley, rice, maize (corn), millet, or wheat. Ara can be made by either fermenting the grains or by distilling them. This drink usually looks clear, creamy, or white.
What is Ara?
Ara is a traditional alcoholic beverage from the Himalayan country of Bhutan. It is often made in people's homes using grains grown in the high mountains. The name "Ara" comes from the Tibetan language, meaning "alcohol" or "liquor."
How is Ara Made?
Most often, Ara is made from rice or maize (corn) right in people's homes or on farms. The process can involve either fermenting the grains or distilling them. In Bhutan, Ara is only allowed to be made and enjoyed privately by families. Its production methods and quality are not checked by the government. Selling Ara is against the law in Bhutan.
Even though selling Ara is not allowed, some farmers used to sell it through shopkeepers. This led to problems with the government. However, making Ara can bring more money than growing just maize. Because of this, many farmers in Bhutan have asked for new laws to make it legal. The government, on the other hand, wants to encourage healthy habits and make sure people do not drink too much alcohol. They try to do this through taxes and rules.
Ara and Bhutanese Culture
Ara is not just a drink; it also has a special place in Bhutanese culture. People make Ara for religious ceremonies, especially in eastern Bhutan. It is used as an offering called a Lhasoel on important days.
Some people also believe that Ara can help keep snakes away. Because of this belief, sometimes children might carry a small amount of Ara for protection when they are out.
How People Enjoy Ara
Ara is usually served warm. People often drink it plain. Sometimes, they add smooth things like butter or a poached egg to it. Other times, they might add chunky things like scrambled egg and rice to their Ara.
