The Aragonese Party (Spanish: Partido Aragonés, PAR) is a political party in Spain. Its main goal is to support the interests of Aragon. Aragon is one of the 17 regions of Spain.

The party started in 1978. It was first called the Aragonese Regionalist Party. In 1990, it changed its name to Aragonese Party. But it kept its short name, PAR. One of its founders was Emilio Eiroa. He later became the leader of the Government of Aragon from 1991 to 1993.

PAR also had members in the European Parliament. This was from 1999 to 2004. They were part of a group called the European Coalition.

What the Aragonese Party Believes In

The Aragonese Party has some key ideas. These ideas guide what they do in politics.

Supporting Aragon

The party strongly believes in Aragonese regionalism. This means they want to protect and promote Aragon's unique culture and history. They work to make sure Aragon has a strong voice in Spain. They also want more power for Aragon to make its own decisions.

Political Stance

The Aragonese Party is seen as a centre to centre-right party. This means their ideas are often in the middle or a bit to the right. They often support conservative ideas. These ideas usually focus on keeping traditional values and a stable society.

The Party's Journey in Elections

The Aragonese Party has been part of many elections. These elections decide who gets to represent the people in government.

Early Success and Leadership

When the party first started, it quickly became important in Aragon. In the 1980s, they gained many seats in the Aragonese Corts. This is Aragon's regional parliament. In 1987, they won 19 seats. This made them the second-largest party. They even led the government of Aragon for a few years. They sometimes worked with other parties like the PP.

Working with Other Parties

Over the years, the Aragonese Party has often worked with other parties. They have formed coalitions to lead Aragon. This means they joined forces with other parties to have enough votes to govern. They worked with the Socialist Party of Aragon (PSOE) and the People's Party (PP) at different times. This shows they could work with both left and right-leaning parties.

Changes in Support

Like many political parties, the Aragonese Party has seen its support change. After their strong start, the number of seats they won began to decrease. For example, in 1995, they won 14 seats. By 2003, this number was 8 seats.

Recent Elections

In recent elections, the party has continued to face challenges. In the 2019 election, they won 3 seats. In the most recent election in 2023, they won 1 seat. This means they still have a voice in the Aragonese Parliament. They continue to work for the interests of Aragon.
