Arakaka is a community in the Barima-Waini region of Guyana. It stands on the Barima River and is about 12 miles south of Port Kaituma. The community is located at an altitude of 63 meters (209 feet) above sea level.
Arakaka is known as a center for gold mining. The area has special types of gold deposits found in certain rocks and soil. Because of these deposits, gold mining here has attracted big companies from other countries. For example, Alicanto Minerals Ltd from Australia and Barrick Gold Corporation from Canada have been interested in mining here.
The number of people living in Arakaka can change. This is because the population often depends on how much mining work is happening in the area. In the past, boats called launches regularly traveled up the river to Arakaka. A mining warden used to be stationed there to oversee the mining activities. Today, Arakaka has a police outpost.
Matthews Ridge is another community located nearby in the same sub-region called Matarkai.
Population and Jobs
According to a population count in 2002, Arakaka had 276 residents. This number can change depending on how much mining is taking place in the area. When there is more mining, more people might move to Arakaka for work.
The table below shows how the population was divided by different types of jobs in 2002.
