Arame or Aramu was the first known king of a kingdom called Urartu. He ruled from 858 BC to 844 BC. Urartu was an ancient kingdom located in what is now eastern Turkey and parts of Armenia and Iran.

Arame's Rule and Challenges
Arame lived at the same time as a powerful king named Shalmaneser III of Assyria. Assyria was a very strong empire. Arame had to fight against the Assyrians to protect his kingdom.
Battles with Assyria
King Shalmaneser III attacked Urartu. He captured Arame's capital city, Arzashkun. Another city, Sagunia, was also taken by Shalmaneser. These cities were likely located near large lakes, Lake Van or Lake Urmia.
Arame in Legends
Some people believe that King Arame might be linked to important figures in Armenian legends. These figures are named Aram and Ara the Beautiful. They are considered legendary ancestors of the Armenian people.
Historical Connections
An old book called History by Khorenatsi mentions these legendary figures. They are placed many generations after a hero named Hayk. Some historians believe these stories might connect to events from the 19th or 18th century BC.
Meaning of the Name
The name Arame probably comes from an ancient language called Proto-Indo-European. In that language, it might have meant "black." The name is also thought to be related to the Hindu name Rama.
Not to Be Confused With
It is important not to confuse this King Arame with another king also named Aramu. That other king ruled in a place called Bit Agusi at the same time. He also fought against Shalmaneser III.
