Arzashkun facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Arzashkun (Armenian: Արզաշկուն) was an important city long ago, around 900 BC. It was the main city, or capital, of a powerful kingdom called Urartu. People think Arzashkun was located in what is now eastern Turkey, north of a large lake called Lake Van.

The city of Arzashkun was well-protected. It had two strong walls and tall towers. A thick forest also helped keep the city safe from attacks, making it hard for enemy armies to travel through.

Urartu and Assyria

The Kingdom of Urartu was located near where the Tigris River begins. Around 857 BC, Shalmaneser III, who was the king of Assyria, saw Urartu as a threat. He decided to lead an army to Urartu.

King Shalmaneser III claimed that he destroyed Arzashkun, the capital city. He also said that he traveled all the way to Lake Van and left a special message carved into a mountain called Mount Irritia. This carved message is known as an inscription.

Name Origin

It is believed that the name Arzashkun is how the Assyrians said an old Armenian name.
