Araya is a town in Venezuela. It is located on Venezuela's Caribbean coast. You can find it at the very end of the Araya Peninsula.
The Historic Araya Fortress
The Araya Fortress is a strong fort. It is made of beige-brown stone. This fort was built to protect Araya. It also guarded the Araya Peninsula. Its main job was to keep Caribbean pirates away.
Long ago, the Spanish Empire was interested in pearls. They found many pearls off the coast of Araya. But the area also had huge salt plains. Salt was very important back then. So, the Dutch and English started taking the salt.
When the pearl hunting ended, the Spanish used the fort. They used it to defend the salt plains. They wanted to keep the English and Dutch away. Later, a big hurricane hit the area. It destroyed the fort. The salt reserves were also lost. After that, the fort was left empty.
