The western part of the Araya Peninsula is famous for its large, natural salt fields. These fields have a unique purple color. For a long time, especially during the colonial era, these salt pans were very important for mining salt.

Where is the Araya Peninsula?

The Araya Peninsula is found on the northern coast of Venezuela. It stretches out into the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. This area is known for its beautiful coastal views.

The peninsula is part of a mountain system. These mountains are a branch of the northern Andes mountain range. The land extends eastward from the coastline.

A History of Salt and Smugglers

The western tip of the Araya Peninsula holds a secret from the past. It has huge, naturally formed salt pans. These areas became a major place for mining salt hundreds of years ago.

In the late 1500s and early 1600s, many Dutch ships came to this region. They were often smugglers, taking salt without permission. Reports say that about one hundred Dutch ships visited each year.

The Fight for Salt

The Spanish rulers did not like the Dutch smuggling salt. In 1605, Spain sent a group to stop the smuggling. This slowed down the illegal trade for a while. However, the Dutch soon returned.

To truly stop the smugglers, Spanish forces started building a strong fort. This happened in 1618. The fort was called El Castillo de Santiago de Araya. It was built to protect the peninsula.

The fortress was finally finished in 1665. Once it was complete, the fort successfully ended the Dutch visits. The Spanish had secured their valuable salt.

Araya in Film

The salt mines of the Araya Peninsula were featured in a famous movie. It was a documentary film called Araya. The film was made in 1959 by a filmmaker named Margot Benacerraf. It even won awards!
