Arborea is a town and comune (which means municipality) in the province of Oristano, on the island of Sardinia, Italy. The town's economy mostly depends on farming and raising animals. People in Arborea grow vegetables, rice, and fruit. They also produce milk, including a special local milk product called Arborea.
History of Arborea
Arborea was built in the 1920s by the Italian government of that time. Before the town was built, the area was covered by marshes. These marshes were drained, making the land suitable for building and farming.
Families, mostly farmers, moved to Arborea to live and work there. These families came from regions in north-eastern Italy, like Veneto and Friuli.
How Arborea Got Its Name
The town of Arborea is named after a medieval kingdom called the Giudicato of Arborea. This kingdom once had its main city in nearby Tharros and later in Oristano.
When the town was first opened on October 29, 1928, it was called Villaggio Mussolini. This name honored the Italian leader Benito Mussolini. Less than two years later, its name was changed to Mussolinia di Sardegna. This helped to tell it apart from another town called Mussolinia di Sicilia. After World War II, the town was given its current name, Arborea.
Twin Towns
Arborea has friendly connections with several other towns. These are called "twin towns" or "sister cities."
