Arch Rivals facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Arch Rivals is an American basketball arcade game that came out in 1989. It was made by Midway Games. Midway called it "A Basket Brawl" because it's not just a regular basketball game! It features two-on-two basketball where players can actually punch each other and steal the ball.

This game lets you pick from different made-up teams. But in the arcade, owners could change the team names to real ones. Later, Arch Rivals was released for home game systems like the Sega Genesis, Sega Game Gear, and Nintendo Entertainment System.

Many people think Arch Rivals was a step before the very popular arcade basketball game NBA Jam.

Most basketball games follow standard rules. A full game usually has four quarters, each lasting four minutes. Each team has two players. You can ask your teammate to pass you the ball or shoot it.

What makes Arch Rivals different is that you can punch an opponent without getting in trouble! You can also steal the ball from them easily. The referee in the game only calls fouls for shot clock violations, not for punching.

There are also some funny things on the court in Arch Rivals. Sometimes, candy wrappers and soda cans are thrown onto the floor. If a player with the ball steps on one of these, they will fall down. This gives the other team a chance to steal the ball!

Meet the Players

There are eight different players you can choose from in Arch Rivals. Each player has a special skill or talent:

  • Blade: A player who the crowd loves to watch.
  • Hammer: Great at getting rebounds (catching the ball after a shot misses).
  • Lewis: Known for being a top shooter.
  • Mohawk: A tough and mean player on the court.
  • Moose: A true champion player.
  • Reggie: An all-around great American player.
  • Tyrone: A giant when it comes to defense.
  • Vinnie: A very good player overall.

Game Presentation

When a team scores a basket, whether it's for two or three points, the game shows different short scenes. Sometimes, you might see the coach yelling at his own players. Other times, players from the opposing team look disgusted. There are also scenes with cheerleaders who say things like "Yay team!" or "Go team go!"
