Archaeobatrachia (say "Ar-kee-oh-ba-TRAY-kee-uh") is a special group of Frogs and toads. They are a "suborder" within the larger group called Anura, which includes all frogs and toads. The name "Archaeobatrachia" means "ancient frogs." This is because they are considered the most primitive or oldest types of frogs alive today.
These ancient frogs have some unique body features. These features are not usually seen in other, more modern frogs and toads. There are 28 known species in this group.
Where Do Ancient Frogs Live?
Archaeobatrachia frogs are found in different parts of the world. You can find them in places like Eurasia (which is Europe and Asia combined). They also live in New Zealand, the Philippines, and Borneo.
The Tailed Frogs
One special family within Archaeobatrachia is called Ascaphidae. These are often known as "tailed frogs." They live in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. There are only two species of tailed frogs known today.
