History of the Palace

The land where the palace stands was given to the church a long time ago. It was a gift from Jose Manuel Thotocopuli, who was the son of the famous artist El Greco.

The palace was not built all at once. Instead, it was constructed over many centuries. In the 16th century, a church leader named Cardinal Tavera asked a well-known architect, Alonso de Covarrubias, to work on the palace. Covarrubias designed an arch that connects the palace to the cathedral. He also designed the main front part of the building. Later, in the 17th century, people tried to make the front of the palace look more uniform and balanced.

What the Palace Looks Like

One of the most interesting parts of the Archbishop's Palace is its main entrance, called the portal. This main portal faces the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, which is the City Hall square.

The sides of the palace entrance are built with a mix of brick and stone. But the very center part is made of smooth stone. Above the main doorway, there is a triangular decoration called a tympanum. This is a common feature in old buildings.

Above this, you can see a small iron balcony. On either side of the balcony, there are carvings of figures that look like nymphs. These figures are holding a cardinal's coat of arms, which is a special symbol for a high-ranking church official. The triangular tympanum itself is decorated with a double eagle symbol. This symbol represents the House of Habsburg, a powerful royal family from history. The decorations are made in a style called Mannerism, which was popular in the 16th century. It often features detailed and sometimes dramatic designs.

Inside the palace, there is a chapel. This chapel was built in the Baroque style, which is known for being very grand and decorative.
