Alonso de Covarrubias (born in Torrijos, Toledo in 1488 – died in 1570) was a famous Spanish architect and sculptor. He was very active during the Renaissance period, especially in the city of Toledo, Spain. He is known for his detailed and beautiful designs, often in the style called Plateresque.

Alonso de Covarrubias's Main Works

Alonso de Covarrubias started his career as a sculptor. He worked with other artists like Antón Egas and Juan Guas. Their early style mixed older Gothic ideas with the new, fancy Plateresque style. Later, he became a well-known architect.

Early Architecture Projects

  • At Sigüenza Cathedral, he helped design beautiful altarpieces for Saint Librada and Fadrique de Portugal. These designs were influenced by another artist, Francisco de Baeza (around 1515).
  • He designed the courtyard and a fancy stairway at the Hospital de Santa Cruz in Toledo. This hospital is now a museum!
  • In 1532, he worked on the sacristy (a room where priests prepare) of Sigüenza Cathedral.

Important Buildings in Toledo

Alonso de Covarrubias created many important buildings in Toledo:

  • In 1534, he became the main supervisor for building projects at Toledo Cathedral. He planned the "New Kings Chapel" inside the cathedral.
  • In 1537, Covarrubias and another architect, Luis de Vega, were chosen to design the Alcázar. This is a large stone fortress. Covarrubias built its main front entrance and the courtyard inside.
  • Starting in 1541, he designed and built the Tavera Hospital (Hospital de Tavera). This is considered one of his most important buildings.
  • Around 1540, he designed the front of the Episcopal Palace of Toledo.
  • He also rebuilt the Puerta de Bisagra Nueva, which is a famous city gate in Toledo.

Other Notable Projects

  • In the 1530s, he built the cloister (a covered walkway) of the Lupiana Monastery.
  • He also worked at the Archbishop's Palace of Alcalá de Henares. There, he built the main front of the palace and a courtyard that no longer exists.
