Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria was a young princess from the powerful Habsburg-Lorraine family. She was born on March 20, 1762, and sadly passed away on January 23, 1770, when she was only seven years old. Her parents were Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor, who was the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire, and his first wife, Isabella of Parma.
Life of a Young Archduchess
Maria Theresa's parents, Crown Prince Joseph and Princess Isabella, got married in Vienna in 1760. Maria Theresa was born on March 20, 1762. She was given a long name: Maria Theresia Elisabeth Philippine Louise Josephe Johanna. As a daughter of the Emperor, she was known as an Archduchess of Austria.
Her family tree was very impressive! On her mother's side, she was related to Philip V of Spain, the first Bourbon King of Spain. On her father's side, she was the granddaughter of the famous Empress Maria Theresa and her husband, Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor. Her family history went back even further, to Charlemagne, a powerful emperor from the 800s.
When Maria Theresa was just over a year old, her mother, Isabella, passed away. This happened shortly after Isabella gave birth to another baby girl, Marie Christine, who also died very soon after being born. Her father, Joseph, was very sad. He found comfort in his young daughter, Maria Theresa, and even called her his "second self." Maria Theresa was also close to her youngest aunt, Marie Antoinette, who was only seven years older than her. Maria Theresa was also the first grandchild of the great Empress Maria Theresa.
Her Sad Passing
Just a few months before her eighth birthday, Archduchess Maria Theresa became very ill. She had a sickness called pleurisy, which affects the lungs. Her father, who was by then the Holy Roman Emperor, did everything he could to help her. He stayed by her bedside, even through the night.
Sadly, Maria Theresa passed away on January 23, 1770, from a very high fever. Her father was heartbroken by her death. He had lost his only child, and he felt a great sadness. He often said that he had lost his "only consolation and pleasure."
Her death made her father even more serious and focused on his work. He was so sad that he kept her dresses and shoes even after she was gone. Maria Theresa was buried in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna. Her tomb has a beautiful statue of her. It shows the young Archduchess sleeping on a bed, covered by a blanket, with her hands raised as if in prayer. Around her are symbols of royalty, like the Holy Crown of Hungary and the crown of the Holy Roman Emperor.
