Archie Birkin's Early Life
Archie Birkin was born in 1905 into a rich family from Nottingham, England. His father was Sir Thomas Stanley Birkin, and his mother was Hon. Margaret Diana Hopetoun Chetwynd.
Motorcycle Racing Career
Archie Birkin was a talented motorcycle racer. He took part in the famous Isle of Man TT races. These races are held on public roads that are temporarily closed for the event.
The 1927 Isle of Man TT Race
During a practice session for the 1927 Isle of Man TT races, Archie Birkin was riding his 500cc McEvoy motorcycle. The practice happened early in the morning.
He was riding at a place called Rhencullen. To avoid hitting a fish delivery van that was on the road, he swerved. Sadly, he had a serious accident during this event.
Changes to Racing Rules
Because of this accident, the rules for the Isle of Man TT Races and the Manx Grand Prix changed. From 1928 onwards, all practice sessions for these races were held only on public roads that were completely closed to other traffic. This made the races safer for everyone involved.
