Ardaris is a small group of butterflies known as firetips. These special butterflies belong to the Hesperiidae family, which are often called "skippers." You can only find Ardaris butterflies in a specific part of the world: the Neotropical region. This means they live in the warmer parts of the Americas.
These unique butterflies are found only in the mountain forests and high-altitude grasslands called páramos. They live in the Cordillera de Mérida mountain range in Venezuela. When a species is found only in one place, it is called endemic. This makes Ardaris butterflies very special and important to protect.

What Are Ardaris Butterflies?
Ardaris butterflies are part of the "firetip" group. Firetips are known for their bright colors, often with fiery orange or red markings. They are usually small to medium-sized butterflies. Like other skippers, they have a quick, darting flight pattern. This is why they are called "skippers."
The Skipper Family
The Hesperiidae family, or skippers, is different from other butterflies. They have stout bodies, like moths, but they fly during the day. Their antennae are also unique. They have a hook at the end, which looks a bit like a golf club. This helps scientists tell them apart from other butterfly families.
Where Do Ardaris Butterflies Live?
Ardaris butterflies are true mountain dwellers. They live high up in the Andes mountains of Venezuela. Specifically, they are found in the Cordillera de Mérida. This area has unique environments that these butterflies need to survive.
Mountain Forests and Páramos
- Mountain Forests: These are cool, moist forests found on the slopes of mountains. They provide shelter and food for the butterflies.
- Páramos: These are special ecosystems found above the tree line in the Andes. They are high-altitude grasslands with unique plants and a cool, often misty climate. Ardaris butterflies have adapted to live in these challenging conditions.
Because Ardaris butterflies are endemic to this specific region, their survival depends on the health of these mountain habitats. Protecting these areas is very important for these rare butterflies.
Species of Ardaris
Currently, there are only two known species in the Ardaris group. Both are found in the same mountain region of Venezuela.
- Ardaris eximia (Hewitson, 1871)
- Ardaris hantra (Evans, 1951)
These names include the scientist who first described them and the year they were named. For example, Ardaris eximia was first described by a scientist named Hewitson in 1871.
