A Look at Argenton's Past

The land where Argenton now stands was first home to the Awabakal people. They were the original inhabitants of this area.

Early Developments

In 1897, a public school opened in Argenton. However, it closed just six years later. A new school for the community opened much later, in 1953. An important safety centre, the Newcastle Mines Rescue Station, started operating here in 1927. It helped keep miners safe.

Sporting History

Argenton is also home to a piece of Newcastle's sporting history. The Waratah Golf Club was started in 1901. It is the oldest golf club in Newcastle.

The Smelter's Story

For many years, a large factory called the Cockle Creek Smelter operated in the area. It started processing lead in 1898. This factory caused a lot of pollution in the surrounding environment. In 2005, it was decided that the smelter would be taken apart. By 2009, most of the factory was gone. The land was then cleaned up and new plants were put in. This helped to make the area much cleaner.
