History: The First Settlers
The first person known to settle permanently in Argyle Township was Jacob Sitter (whose family name is now often "Seder"). On July 1, 1861, Jacob bought 320 acres of land in the township from the state of Michigan. He built a two-story barn on this land. The first floor was for his animals, and his family lived on the second floor!
