Arija is a small town and municipality located in the Province of Burgos, Spain. It is in the northern part of the province, within the autonomous community of Castile-Leon. This town has a very long history, going back more than a thousand years!
Arija is split into two main parts: the 'neighborhood above' and the 'neighborhood below', which is also called 'Vilga'. It used to be part of a larger area known as Santa Gadea de Alfoz.
Arija's Industrial Past
Arija's more recent history is closely connected to a big factory. In 1906, a company called Cristalería Española S.A. set up a factory here. This factory was part of a large French company, Saint-Gobain Emporium. Saint-Gobain was founded way back in 1665 by King Louis XIV of France! They were experts at making flat glass.
Arija and the Ebro River
Today, Arija is located right on the edge of an artificial lake. This lake was created when the Ebro river was dammed. This means a large wall was built across the river to hold back the water, forming a lake.
