About Arístides Royo
Early Life and Education
Arístides Royo was born on August 14, 1940. He studied law at the University of Salamanca in Spain. After finishing his studies, he returned to Panama in 1965.
While studying in Spain, Royo met Adela María Ruiz González. She was a Spanish citizen. They married in the early 1960s. Together, they had three children: Marta Elena, Irma Natalia, and Aristides José. Adela Ruiz de Royo, who was also Panama's former First Lady, passed away on June 19, 2019.
Public Service and Presidency
Before becoming president, Royo held important government positions. From 1973 to 1974, he served as the Minister of Education. This role helped him gain valuable experience in public service.
A very important part of his career was helping to negotiate the Torrijos–Carter Treaties in 1977. These treaties were about the future of the Panama Canal. They decided that Panama would eventually take full control of the Canal from the United States.
Royo became President of Panama on October 11, 1978. He served in this high office until July 31, 1982. During his time as president, he worked to lead the country.
After the Presidency
After his presidency, Arístides Royo continued to serve Panama in other important roles. He was appointed as the Ambassador to Spain from 1994 to 1996. Later, he served as the Ambassador to France from 1998 to 1999. His experience and connections helped him represent Panama well in these countries.
Today, Arístides Royo is the Minister of Canal Affairs. This means he helps manage everything related to the Panama Canal. The current administrator of the Panama Canal is Ricaurte Vásquez Morales. Royo is also a senior partner at the law firm Morgan & Morgan.
His family continues to be involved in public service. In December 2019, his daughter, Natalia Royo de Hagerman, was appointed as Panama's ambassador to the United Kingdom.
