Adela María Ruiz González, also known as Adela Ruiz de Royo, was born on December 15, 1943, and passed away on June 19, 2019. She was a talented mathematics teacher and scholar from Spain who later became a citizen of Panama. Adela Ruiz de Royo served as the First Lady of Panama from 1978 to 1982. This was during the time her husband, Aristides Royo, was the President of Panama. She also led the Panamanian Academy of Language (Academia Panameña de la Lengua).

About Adela Ruiz de Royo
Adela María Ruiz González was born in a town called Grado, in Asturias, Spain. Her parents were José María and Rosalina. She grew up in the nearby city of Oviedo with her three sisters: Marta, Mabel, and María José. Friends and family often called her Deli.
Her Education and Family Life
In 1960, Adela moved to Salamanca to study medicine. There, she met Aristides Royo, a student from Panama. They were both studying at the University of Salamanca. Adela and Aristides got married in the early 1960s. They had three children together: Marta Elena, Irma Natalia, and Aristides José. On September 17, 1965, Adela, Aristides, and their oldest daughter, Marta, moved to Panama to live permanently.
Role as First Lady
Besides her own career, Adela Ruiz de Royo also had an important role as the wife of a government minister and politician. She became the First Lady of Panama in 1978 and served until 1982. During her time as First Lady, she started a special organization called the Asociación Pro Obras de Beneficencia. This group worked to help people in need.
Later Life and Legacy
Adela Ruiz de Royo passed away on June 19, 2019, at the age of 75. She was survived by her husband, Aristides Royo, and their three children. Her funeral was held in Panama City on June 24, 2019. Some of her ashes were buried in Spain, her home country. A special ceremony was also held in Oviedo, Spain, on October 4, 2019. Her remaining ashes were scattered into the Cantabrian Sea by her family.
In December 2019, Adela's daughter, Natalia Royo de Hagerman, was chosen to be Panama's ambassador to the United Kingdom.
