Club Career: Where Did He Play?
Starting Out in Portugal and Spain
Ariza Makukula's father was also a footballer from Congo who played in Portugal. Ariza moved to Portugal when he was five years old. He started playing football in the youth teams of Vitória de Setúbal.
He later joined Vitória de Guimarães and was loaned to Brito SC. His professional career began in Spain. He played for UD Salamanca and CD Leganés. In the 2001–02 season, he scored 20 goals for Salamanca. This was the second-highest number of goals in that league!
Playing in France: FC Nantes
In 2002, Makukula moved to France to play for FC Nantes. He played for both the main team and the reserve team. He scored one goal in Ligue 1, which is France's top football league.
After Nantes, he was loaned to Real Valladolid in Spain. He scored eight goals there. However, his team was moved down to a lower league. He also had a knee injury that kept him from playing for almost a year.
Time with Sevilla FC
In 2004, Sevilla FC bought Makukula for about €3.5 million. Because of his injury, he didn't play his first game for Sevilla until January 2005.
He scored his first goal for Sevilla in a cup game. Four days later, he scored his only league goal for them. He also scored a crucial goal in the UEFA Cup against Panathinaikos F.C., helping Sevilla win.
In the 2005–06 season, Makukula continued to struggle with injuries. Sevilla also signed other strong forwards. He played only one game that season, which was in the UEFA Cup semi-final. Sevilla went on to win the UEFA Cup that year!
In August 2006, he was loaned to Gimnàstic de Tarragona. He scored one goal in 14 matches for them. His team was moved down to a lower league at the end of the season.
Moving to Benfica
In July 2007, Makukula was loaned to C.S. Marítimo in Portugal. He had a great start, scoring two goals in his first game. He scored seven goals in just 13 games for Marítimo.
Because of his good performance, S.L. Benfica bought him in January 2008. He scored a goal for Benfica in the UEFA Cup.
He didn't play much for Benfica in the first part of the 2008–09 season. In January 2009, he was loaned to Bolton Wanderers F.C. in England. He played six games for them in the Premier League.
Later Career and Travels
In August 2009, Makukula was loaned to Kayserispor in Turkey. He had an amazing season there! He finished as the top scorer in the Süper Lig, scoring 21 goals. This was eight more goals than the second-best scorer.
In 2010, he signed with another Turkish team, Manisaspor. He later played for Karşıyaka S.K. in Turkey's second division.
After five years abroad, he returned to Portugal in 2013 to play for Vitória de Setúbal. He faced more knee injuries there.
In September 2013, he moved to Greece to play for OFI Crete F.C.. In February 2014, he moved again, this time to BEC Tero Sasana F.C. in Thailand. He left Thailand after two months and returned to his home country, where he became a sporting director for their national team.
International Career: Playing for Portugal
Makukula chose to play for Portugal. He first played for the under-21 team.
He wanted to play for the DR Congo (his birth country) later on. However, a rule from FIFA (the world football organization) said players could only change their national team before they turned 21. Since he was older, he couldn't switch. This rule was later changed in 2009.
In October 2007, after playing well for Marítimo, he was called up to the Portugal senior team. He played in a qualifying game for UEFA Euro 2008 against Kazakhstan. He scored his first goal for Portugal in that game, helping them win 2–1.
He was considered for the 2010 FIFA World Cup squad but did not make the final team.
