How the Arizona Science Center Started

From a Small Idea to a Big Museum

The idea for the Arizona Science Center began in 1980. A group called the Junior League of Phoenix wanted to create a science center. They imagined a place where everyone could learn about science.

The museum first opened in 1984. It was called the Arizona Museum of Science & Technology back then. It started as a small exhibit space. This first location was about 10,000 square feet. It was even located in a parking garage!

Growing Bigger and Better

In its first year, more than 87,000 people visited the museum. Everyone loved it so much that they needed a bigger place. Because of this demand, a new building was planned.

The new, much larger building was completed in 1997. This amazing building is 120,000 square feet. It was designed by a famous architect named Antoine Predock. When the Science Center moved to its new home, the area around it became known as Heritage and Science Park.

Fun Programs and Events

The Arizona Science Center is known for many exciting programs. One of its most popular events is the annual Snow Week. During this special week, the center brings in real snow for visitors to enjoy! It's a unique way to experience winter in sunny Arizona.

The museum also works with other local groups. In 2009, it made an agreement with the nearby Phoenix Museum of History. This allowed the Science Center to show some of their collection.
