Antoine Samuel Predock (pronounced PREE-dok) was an American architect. He was born on June 24, 1936, and passed away on March 2, 2024. He lived and worked in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Predock started his own architecture studio in 1967. It was called Antoine Predock Architect PC. He first became well-known for his design of the La Luz community in Albuquerque.
His work includes many famous buildings. He designed the Turtle Creek House in Texas. He also created the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery. One of his most famous projects is Petco Park. This is a baseball stadium for the San Diego Padres. Predock also worked on buildings in other countries. These include the National Palace Museum Southern Branch in Taiwan. He also designed the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Canada. Predock often said that his designs were greatly inspired by his strong connection to New Mexico.
Growing Up
Antoine Samuel Predock was born in Lebanon, Missouri. This was on June 24, 1936. Even though he was born there, he thought of himself as an Albuquerque native. He moved to Albuquerque when he started college.
Predock gave credit to his parents for his interests. His mother studied liberal arts. She encouraged his artistic side. His father was an engineer. He helped Predock develop his technical skills.
Predock first studied engineering at the University of Missouri. He then went to the University of New Mexico. He wanted to be like his father. Even though he was a good student, he didn't enjoy engineering much.
He took a technical drawing class. It was taught by an architecture professor. This class made Predock think about what he really wanted to do. After a short break, he returned to the University of New Mexico. He was 21 years old. This time, he decided to study architecture. His professor encouraged him to apply to other schools. Predock was accepted into Columbia University. There, he earned his degree in architecture.
His Career
Predock opened his first office in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This was in 1967. Later, he also opened offices in California and Taipei.
Antoine Predock and his team designed many buildings. They worked on over 100 projects. Their work was shown in more than 60 exhibitions. It was also featured in over 250 books. More than 1,000 publications wrote about his designs. Predock also taught at many universities. He taught at least 14 schools in the United States and other countries.
His Life and Passing
Antoine Predock was married twice. His first marriage was to Jennifer Masley. It ended in divorce. He married his second wife, Constance DeJong, in 2004. Predock had two sons.
He passed away at his home in Albuquerque. This was on March 2, 2024. He was 87 years old.
