Arjen Lubach (born 22 October 1979) is a famous Dutch comedian, writer, music producer, and TV presenter. He is best known for hosting popular weekly TV shows where he talks about the news in a funny and smart way.

From 2014 to 2021, he hosted Zondag met Lubach (Sunday with Lubach). After that, he presented De Avondshow met Arjen Lubach (The Evening Show with Arjen Lubach) from 2022 to 2024. He has announced that he will start a new show in 2025.

Early Life and School

Arjen Lubach was born in Groningen, Netherlands, on 22 October 1979. He grew up in a small town called Lutjegast until he was 15 years old.

His parents were both lawyers. His father was also a professor at the University of Groningen. Arjen and his two brothers grew up outside the main village. He sometimes felt like an outsider because his family did not speak the local Gronings dialect.

When Arjen was 11, his mother became very ill and passed away a year later. This was a very difficult time for him. After primary school, he went to Maartenscollege in Haren.

Later, Arjen studied Spanish at the University of Groningen. He also worked as a taxi driver for a while and even as a harbourmaster on the island of Vlieland. He then decided to study philosophy. During his studies, he met Janine Abbring, and they later created a hit song together.

Arjen Lubach has had a very busy career in many different areas.

Writing Books and Articles

In 2006, Arjen published his first book, Mensen die ik ken die mijn moeder hebben gekend (People I Know Who Knew My Mother). He has written several other novels, including Bastaardsuiker (Brown Sugar) in 2008 and Magnus in 2011.

In 2013, his thriller IV was nominated for a big award called the Gouden Strop. Besides books, he also writes columns for magazines and opinion pieces for newspapers. He has also written scripts for films and plays.

Theatre Shows

In 2001, Arjen joined a theatre group called Op Sterk Water. With this group, he performed at big festivals like Lowlands and in theatres in the Netherlands and Belgium. He left the group in 2014 to focus on his TV show.

He also performed with comedian Tim Kamps in a show called Het Monica da Silva Trio. They played this show at festivals and in theatres from 2009 to 2013.

Radio Work

Arjen started his radio career at a local station in Groningen called OOG Radio. He volunteered there for two years, presenting a daily show.

In 2003, he got a late-night show on a national radio station, 3FM. He was also a sidekick for other famous radio presenters like Claudia de Breij. In 2007, he had a weekly spot on the VPRO radio program De Avonden.

Since 2005, Arjen has run a comedy website called Buro Renkema with his friends. Some of their funny videos were shown on popular TV shows. In 2007, a big bank even threatened to sue them over a parody video, but the bank eventually gave up.

Arjen has been a judge on the show Lama Gezocht and presented De Nieuwste Show for BNN. In 2010, he took part in the popular TV game show Wie is de Mol? (Who is the Mole?).

He also writes scripts for TV films. In 2012, he won the TV show De Slimste Mens (The Smartest Human), which is a quiz show.

From 2013, Arjen co-presented MolTalk, a show that discussed Wie is de Mol?. He also had a monthly language segment on the popular talk show De Wereld Draait Door.

On 9 November 2014, the first episode of Zondag met Lubach aired. This was a satirical talk show where he humorously looked at the news of the past week. In 2015, he made headlines when he jokingly called himself "Pharaoh of the Netherlands" on the show. This led to him being named "Republican of the Year."

In 2017, a video from Zondag met Lubach called "The Netherlands welcomes Trump in his own words" became super popular online. It made fun of former US President Donald Trump in a clever way and was watched over 73 million times around the world! This video even inspired other countries to make their own similar parody videos.

Music Career

In 2001, Arjen and Janine Abbring had a hit song called Jelle under the name Slimme Schemer ft. Tido. It was a funny parody of a famous song by Eminem and Dido.

In 2014, a song called Firestone by Kygo was released. Arjen Lubach helped write this song. In 2020, he wrote a book called Stoorzender which tells the story of how this song was sold without his full knowledge.

In 2015, Arjen secretly released a song called "Justified (Sunrise Funk)" using the name Hartebees, and it became a hit! A radio host later found out it was Arjen. In 2016, it was revealed that Arjen Lubach is also part of a dance music duo called The Galaxy. They have released several EPs (mini-albums).

Arjen's Views

Arjen Lubach has shared some of his strong opinions over the years.

He believes that the Netherlands should not have a monarchy (a king or queen). He thinks that believing in a God is interesting, but he is an atheist himself. He has said that letting go of his religious beliefs felt like a great freedom.

Arjen is a vegetarian. In his show, he has talked about why people should eat less meat, especially to help the environment. He has also strongly criticized the way animals are treated in factory farming, showing videos and talking about issues like farm fires and mistreatment of animals.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands, he supported the Dutch government's stance on certain financial matters in Europe.
