The Arledge Mounds are two ancient earth mounds found in the state of Ohio. These mounds were built by Native American people many years ago. They are located in a farm field near Circleville in Pickaway County.

Discovering the Arledge Mounds

The Arledge Mounds are a pair of interesting earthworks. They sit in the middle of a farm field. You won't find them right next to a road.

What Makes These Mounds Unique?

These two mounds are different sizes. The smaller mound is about 5 feet (1.5 m) tall. It is also around 65 feet (20 m) wide. The larger mound is much bigger. It stands about 20 feet (6.1 m) tall and is about 120 feet (37 m) wide.

What makes the Arledge Mounds very special is how close they are. Most groups of mounds in Ohio are separate. But these two mounds are actually connected at their base. Only the Arledge Mounds and the McMurray Mounds are known to be joined together like this.

Who Built These Ancient Earthworks?

Archaeologists believe the Adena culture likely built the Arledge Mounds. The Adena were a group of Native American people. They lived in Ohio and nearby areas a very long time ago. They are known for building many earth mounds. The McMurray Mounds, which are also connected, were built by the Adena people. Even though the Arledge Mounds have not been dug up by archaeologists, experts think the Adena were the builders.

Protecting Important Historical Sites

The Arledge Mounds are very important. They are undisturbed, meaning they haven't been dug up or changed. This makes them a valuable archaeological site. An archaeological site is a place where people can study the past.

Because of their importance, the Arledge Mounds were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This list helps protect special places in the United States. It recognizes them as important parts of history.
