Armourdale, Kansas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Armourdale is a special area, or neighborhood, located in the lower part of the Kansas River valley in Kansas City, Kansas. It's a key spot between the West Bottoms and the Rosedale, Kansas area. The Kansas River flows around the entire district, forming a U-shaped bend, like an oxbow curve. This area is home to two nice places for outdoor fun: Shawnee Park and Bill Clem Park.

History of Armourdale

Armourdale was first planned out in 1880. It became its own city in 1882. The name "Armourdale" comes from the Armour meatpacking plant. This big company had a factory in the area.

In March 1886, several smaller cities joined together. This created the "new" Kansas City, Kansas. Armourdale was one of these cities that became part of the larger Kansas City.

Armourdale has faced some big challenges. It was badly damaged by a huge flood in 1903. Another major flood hit in 1951, causing about $50 million in damage. But in 1993, new floodwalls were built. These strong walls protected Armourdale, and the district had no damage from that flood.
