Arnao de Flandes was a famous master glassmaker. He was born in a place called Flanders (which is now part of Belgium) sometime in the late 1400s. People believe he moved to Spain between 1480 and 1490. There, he opened a special workshop to create beautiful stained glass windows.

Arnao de Flandes: A Master of Stained Glass

Arnao de Flandes was known for his incredible skill in making stained glass. This is a type of art where colorful pieces of glass are joined together to create pictures. These windows often tell stories from the Bible or show important people.

He set up his workshop in a Spanish city called Burgos. From there, he created amazing windows for several large churches, known as cathedrals. Some of his famous works include windows for:

  • Avila Cathedral (around 1497)
  • Palencia Cathedral (around 1503)
  • Burgos Cathedral (between 1511 and 1515)

His Talented Family

Arnao de Flandes had two sons who also became skilled glassmakers, just like him. They continued the family tradition of creating beautiful stained glass art.

  • Arnao de Flandes the Younger sometimes gets mixed up with his father. He worked on windows for Seville Cathedral from 1534 to 1557.
  • Arnao de Vergara was another son. He also made windows for Seville Cathedral (between 1525 and 1538). He also worked on windows for Astorga Cathedral (from 1525 to 1528) and the Monastery of Saint Jerome (from 1544 to 1550).
