Who Was Arnaud Guillaume?
Arnaud Guillaume was born in a place called Barbazan-Dessus, in the Hautes-Pyrénées region of France. He was a very important member of the Armagnac party. This group strongly supported King Charles VII. He was also a strong opponent of the Burgundians, another powerful group at the time.
A Knight in the Hundred Years' War
Arnaud Guillaume played a key role in many battles during the long conflict known as the Hundred Years' War. This war was fought between France and England.
Defending Melun
In 1420, Arnaud Guillaume bravely defended the city of Melun against the English army. Despite his efforts, the English managed to capture him.
Prisoner of War
After being captured, Arnaud Guillaume became a prisoner of war. He was held by the English for a long time, from 1420 until 1430. Even after ten years as a prisoner, he did not give up.
The Irreproachable Knight's Final Battle
Once he was released in 1430, Arnaud Guillaume immediately returned to fighting. He continued to battle against both the Burgundians and the English. Sadly, he died in combat in 1431. This happened during the Battle of Bulgnéville, which took place in the Vosges mountains near the villages of Bulgnéville and Vaudoncourt.
A Hero's Burial
Because of his amazing bravery and loyal service to France and King Charles VII, Arnaud Guillaume received a very special honor. He was buried at the Saint Denis Basilica. This is a very important church where many French kings are buried. His funeral was a grand state funeral, usually only given to kings. This showed how much he was respected and admired as a true hero.
