Arne Joachim Bendiksen (born October 19, 1926 – died March 26, 2009) was a very important Norwegian singer, composer, and music producer. Many people called him the "father of pop music" in Norway because he helped shape the sound of popular music for many years.

A Music Star is Born

Arne Bendiksen was born in Bergen, Norway. He became a big name in Norwegian popular music during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.

Early Career and The Monn Keys

He first gained fame as a member of a music group called The Monn Keys. Later, he became a solo artist. He also wrote songs for many other singers. Arne was very talented. He wrote his own songs and also translated many popular foreign songs into Norwegian. This helped them become big hits in Norway too!

Eurovision Song Contest

Arne Bendiksen was a big part of the Eurovision Song Contest for Norway. He took part many times, both as a singer and as a songwriter.

  • In 1964, he sang Spiral at the Eurovision Song Contest 1964.
  • In 1973, he sang Å, for et spill at the Eurovision Song Contest 1973.
  • In 1974, he sang Hvor er du? at the Eurovision Song Contest 1974.

He also wrote songs for other artists to sing at Eurovision. One of his most famous songs was Intet er nytt under solen. Åse Kleveland sang this song in 1966 at the Eurovision Song Contest 1966. It did very well, finishing in third place!

Running His Own Record Company

In 1964, Arne Bendiksen started his own record company. Thanks to him, many popular artists became famous. These included singers like Wenche Myhre and Kirsti Sparboe.

However, in the Eurovision Song Contest 1969 finals, a song he composed called Oj, oj, oj, så glad jeg skal bli only received one point. Kirsti Sparboe performed this song. But Arne didn't let this stop him! He kept working hard as a singer and songwriter throughout the 1970s.

Children's Music and Later Years

In the 1980s, Arne tried something new. He started making popular children's music cassettes. His most famous children's work was Barnefest i Andeby (Children's party in Duckburg). This cassette was full of fun songs about the different Disney characters who live in the made-up city of Duckburg. It was so popular that he made a second one, just for Christmas, called Jul i Andeby (Christmas in Duckburg).

In June 2006, Arne's brand-new children's musical play was performed for the first time. It happened at a small elementary school called Fjellstrand Skole in Nesodden, Akershus.

Arne Bendiksen passed away on March 26, 2009. He had been sick for a short time.
