History of Arnold, Ohio
The story of Arnold began in 1893. A railroad station was built there. The land where the community started belonged to a person named Mrs. George Arnold.
Early Days and the Post Office
The railroad station was first called New California. However, the name changed when people wanted to open a post office. The Arnold Post Office officially opened on June 21, 1894. James Arnold was the first Postmaster. He was in charge of the post office.
James Arnold closed his grocery store soon after. Because of this, the post office was closed in 1896. Fred Smith was then chosen to be the next Postmaster. But he also closed his business before he could start his duties.
Growth of the Community
Later in 1896, Mrs. Carrie Fleck became the Postmaster. She and her husband opened a store in the community. Mrs. Fleck continued to run the post office until it closed on February 28, 1910.
By 1913, the Flecks' store had grown quite a bit. Arnold also had another grocery store. There was an axe handle factory and two warehouses. The railroad station was still there. The community had 24 houses and about 100 people living there.
