Arock is a small, quiet community located in Malheur County, Oregon, in the United States. It's an unincorporated rural hamlet, meaning it's a small settlement without its own local government. Even though it's small, Arock has its own post office and a school for kids from kindergarten through eighth grade. A creek called Jordan Creek flows nearby, eventually joining the Owyhee River just west of Arock. Arock is also part of the larger Ontario, Oregon–Idaho Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Arock's Story
Arock got its name in 1922. People say it was named after a special rock nearby that had ancient carvings made by Native Americans. These carvings are called petroglyphs. The Arock post office was officially opened in 1926 and serves the area with ZIP Code 97902.
Historic Buildings
The oldest building in Malheur County is located near Arock. It's called Sheep Ranch Fort. This historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This means it's recognized as an important historical site in the United States.
Basque Settlers
Arock is one of several places in southeast Oregon that were settled by Basque herders. The Basque people are an ethnic group from a region in the western Pyrenees mountains, between France and Spain. Many of them came to the American West to work as shepherds.
