Arriate is a town and municipality in southern Spain. It is located in the Province of Málaga, which is part of the Andalusia region. Arriate is about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the city of Malaga. Around 3,600 people live here. People from Arriate are called Arriateños.

History of Arriate

Long ago, even before the nearby city of Ronda had a name, people lived in the area where Arriate is now. Cave dwellers lived in the hills next to the Rio Guadalcobacin.

Ancient Settlements

Around 800 BC, a busy settlement of the Iberians existed here. It included at least three hill forts, which were like small castles on hills. Cerro del Coto was a very good spot for a defensive fort. Archeologists have found proof that these early communities traded with the Phoenicians, who were ancient traders.

Becoming Independent

On February 14, 1630, the people of Arriate bought their freedom from Ronda. They paid a large sum of 352,739 Maravedíes, which was an old Spanish currency. After this, the town officially took its current name, Arriate. The name probably came from an old estate that existed since Arab times. The word "Arriate" comes from the Arab term "Arriadh," which means "the gardens."

Early Human Presence

Not much is known about Arriate's very early history. However, caves found in the rocks along the river banks suggest that people have lived here for a very long time. The area's gentle hills, water sources, and good hunting made it a great place for early hunters and farmers.

The Battle of Arriate

Because Arriate was close to Ronda, it was often a place of fights and battles. These battles were usually about controlling important cities like Acinipo and later Ronda. One famous event was the Battle of Arriate in 1407. In this battle, Christian and Muslim armies fought. Hernando Arias, the mayor of Canete la Real, set up an ambush for the Muslim armies. His troops attacked them in the Guadalcobacín river, causing many losses for the Muslims.

Geography and Nature

Arriate is located on the slopes of the Guadalcobacín river, which is a branch of the Guadiaro river. This river flows along the north and west sides of the municipality. It creates beautiful "gallery-woods" where the trees on the banks grow very close together.

Close to the town, there are fertile areas used for farming. Here, you can see fruit trees and vegetables growing alongside olive trees and cereal fields. Arriate is also surrounded by lovely natural areas. Even though they are outside the town, the Sierras de Las Cumbres (911 meters high) and Salinas (954 meters high) form a beautiful background. These mountains are mostly covered with oak woods, and there is also the Dehesa de Parchite, a type of open woodland.
