The Mirande district is an administrative area in France. It is part of the Gers department in the Occitanie region. The main city and capital of this district is Mirande.

History of the Mirande District

The Mirande district was created on February 17, 1800. It was one of the first districts formed in the Gers department.

Geography and Size

The Mirande district is the southernmost part of the Gers department. It is also the smallest district in the department. Its total area is about 1,686 square kilometers (651 square miles).

It has the fewest people living in it compared to other districts in Gers. In 2014, about 37,945 people lived here. This means the population density was about 22.5 people per square kilometer. Population density tells you how many people live in a certain area.

Cantons and Communes

France has smaller areas called cantons. After a change in how cantons are organized, they are no longer just parts of one district. This means a canton can include small towns (called communes) that belong to different districts.

In the Mirande district, there are some cantons where not all their communes are within this district. For example, parts of the Astarac-Gimone and Fezensac cantons are in other districts.
