Arrondissements of the Haute-Marne department facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

There are three main districts in the Haute-Marne department of France. These districts are called arrondissements in French. Think of them like smaller areas within a larger region, similar to boroughs or counties.

Each arrondissement has a main town or city that acts as its capital. This capital city is called a subprefecture. If the main capital city of the entire Haute-Marne department is located within one of these arrondissements, then that city serves as both the department's capital (prefecture) and the arrondissement's capital (subprefecture).

These arrondissements are further divided into even smaller areas called communes. Communes are like local towns or villages, each with its own local government.

The three arrondissements in Haute-Marne are:

  • Chaumont: The capital of this arrondissement is Chaumont. In 2014, about 64,970 people lived here. It covers an area of 2,476.3 square kilometers and includes 159 communes.
  • Langres: The capital of this arrondissement is Langres. In 2014, it had about 44,332 residents. Its area is 2,162.9 square kilometers, and it contains 157 communes.
  • Saint-Dizier: The capital of this arrondissement is Saint-Dizier. Around 71,371 people lived here in 2014. It covers 1,571.4 square kilometers and has 111 communes.

A Look Back: How the Arrondissements Changed

The Haute-Marne department and its districts have changed a few times since they were first created.

  • 1790: The Haute-Marne department was first created. It had six smaller areas called districts: Bourbonne, Bourmont, Chaumont, Joinville, Langres, and Saint-Dizier. The main capital city for the whole department was Chaumont.
  • 1800: The department was reorganized into three arrondissements: Chaumont, Langres, and Wassy.
  • 1926: The arrondissement of Wassy was removed. This meant there were only two arrondissements for a while.
  • 1943: Wassy became an arrondissement again. However, its capital city (subprefecture) was moved to Saint-Dizier.
