Arrondissements of the Loiret department facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

France is divided into smaller areas called arrondissements. These are like special districts that help organize the country. In France, a department is a large area, and it's split into several arrondissements. The main town of an arrondissement is called a subprefecture. If the main town of the whole department is inside an arrondissement, then that town acts as both the department's capital and the arrondissement's capital. Arrondissements are further divided into even smaller areas called communes, which are like local towns or villages.

The Loiret department has three main arrondissements:

  • The Montargis arrondissement has Montargis as its capital. In 2014, about 170,781 people lived there. It covers an area of about 2,631 square kilometers.
  • The Orléans arrondissement has Orléans as its capital. This is the largest, with about 435,676 people in 2014. It covers about 2,945 square kilometers.
  • The Pithiviers arrondissement has Pithiviers as its capital. It's the smallest, with around 63,280 people in 2014. Its area is about 1,198 square kilometers.

How Loiret's Arrondissements Changed Over Time

The way the Loiret department is organized has changed a few times since it was first created.

Early Days of Loiret

  • 1790: The Loiret department was first created. It had seven smaller areas called districts. These districts were Orléans, Beaugency, Neuville, Pithiviers, Montargis, Gien, and Boiscommun. The main city for the whole department was Orléans.

Changes in the 1800s

  • 1800: The districts were reorganized into four arrondissements. These new arrondissements were Orléans, Gien, Montargis, and Pithiviers.

Later Adjustments

  • 1926: Two of the arrondissements, Gien and Pithiviers, were removed. This meant the department had fewer main administrative areas for a while.
  • 1942: The Pithiviers area was made an arrondissement again. This brought the number of arrondissements back up, similar to how it is today.
