Arrondissements of the Tarn department facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Tarn department in France has two special areas called arrondissements. You can think of an arrondissement like a big district or a borough. These areas help organize the department.

Each arrondissement has a main city called a subprefecture. If the main city of the whole department is inside an arrondissement, that city acts as both the department's capital and the arrondissement's capital.

Arrondissements are then split into smaller parts. These smaller parts are called cantons and communes. Communes are like towns or villages.

How Tarn's Arrondissements Changed Over Time

The way the Tarn department is organized has changed a few times since it was first created.

  • 1790: The Tarn department was first created. It had five districts: Albi, Castres, Lavaur, Gaillac, and Lacaune. Back then, the capital city would switch between Albi and Castres.
  • 1800: The districts were changed into arrondissements. There were four of them: Albi, Castres, Gaillac, and Lavaur.
  • 1926: Two of the arrondissements, Gaillac and Lavaur, were removed. This left the Tarn department with the two arrondissements we know today: Albi and Castres.
