Arrondissements of the Var department facts for kids
The Var department in France has three main areas called arrondissements. You can think of an arrondissement like a large district or a borough. These areas help manage the department better.
Each arrondissement has a main town. This town is called a subprefecture. If the main city of the whole department (which is called a prefecture) is inside an arrondissement, then that city acts as both the prefecture for the department and the subprefecture for its arrondissement.
Arrondissements are then split into smaller areas called communes. Communes are like towns or villages.
The three arrondissements in Var are:
- Arrondissement of Draguignan, with Draguignan as its subprefecture. It has 58 communes.
- Arrondissement of Toulon, with Toulon as its prefecture. It has 34 communes.
- Arrondissement of Brignoles, with Brignoles as its subprefecture. It has 61 communes.
History of Var's Arrondissements
The Var department has seen some changes to its districts over time. Here's a quick look at how they developed:
- In 1790, the Var department was created. It had several districts. The main city, or capital, was Toulon.
- The capital moved a few times. In 1793, it went to Grasse. Then in 1795, it moved to Brignoles. By 1797, Draguignan became the capital.
- In 1800, four arrondissements were set up: Brignoles, Draguignan, Grasse, and Toulon.
- In 1860, the Grasse arrondissement became part of a new department called Alpes-Maritimes.
- In 1926, the Brignoles arrondissement was removed.
- In 1974, Brignoles became an arrondissement again. The department's capital moved from Draguignan to Toulon.
