Arroyo Hondo is a small community in Taos County, New Mexico, United States. It is near the town of Taos. In 2010, about 474 people lived here. It is called a "census-designated place" because the government counts its population for official records.
A Look Back at History
Arroyo Hondo is known for an important event in its past. This happened during the Mexican–American War. At that time, New Mexico was becoming part of the United States.
The Taos Revolt
In 1847, some New Mexicans and Native Americans were unhappy with the new United States government. They started a protest called the Taos Revolt.
On January 20, 1847, a conflict happened at a place called Simon Turley's mill and distillery. Several people working there were killed during this uprising. This event is a key part of the history of the Taos Revolt.
Education
Students in Arroyo Hondo attend schools that are part of the Taos Municipal Schools district. This district also operates Taos High School.
