Becoming an Independent Town
For many years, Arroyo del Ojanco was part of the larger town of Beas de Segura. But the people of Arroyo del Ojanco wanted to manage their own local government.
The Journey to Independence
The journey to become an independent municipality was a long one. It started way back in 1953 when they first asked for independence. This request was turned down. They tried again in 1958, but it was also refused.
In 1983, a special group was formed to help Arroyo del Ojanco become independent. They worked hard and submitted their request to the local council. Finally, after a lawsuit, the court approved their independence in 1993. However, it took until January 21, 2001, for Arroyo del Ojanco to officially become its own separate town.
The Ancient Olive Tree
One of the most special things in Arroyo del Ojanco is the Fuentebuena olive tree. This amazing tree is located in the village's area.
A Natural Monument
The government of Andalusia has declared the Fuentebuena olive tree a Natural Monument. This means it is a very important natural landmark that needs to be protected.
World Record Holder
What makes this olive tree even more incredible is that it is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. It is known as the most ancient olive tree in the entire world!
