Arsalan Rahmani Daulat was an important leader in Afghanistan. He worked to bring peace to his country. He was part of the Afghan parliament and later joined a special council to talk with different groups.
Who Was Arsalan Rahmani Daulat?
Arsalan Rahmani Daulat was born in 1944 in Paktika, Afghanistan. He became a well-known figure in Afghan politics. He was chosen to be part of the Meshrano Jirga in 2005 and again in 2010. The Meshrano Jirga is like the upper house of Afghanistan's parliament. It is a key part of the country's government.
His Role in Government
In 1998, Arsalan Rahmani Daulat was appointed as a Deputy Minister for Higher Education. This meant he helped manage schools and universities. Later, the United Nations Security Council created a special list in 1999. This list, called Resolution 1267, included senior members of the Taliban. The United Nations asked countries to freeze the money of people on this list. Mr. Rahmani Daulat was one of the people on this list.
However, he was also one of four former Taliban leaders who agreed to work with the Afghan government. This was part of an effort to bring peace to the country. He also served as a deputy leader for political affairs in a group called Khuddamul Furqan.
Working for Peace
In September 2010, Hamid Karzai, who was the President of Afghanistan at the time, chose Arsalan Rahmani Daulat for a very important role. He became one of seventy members of the Afghan High Peace Council.
The main job of this Peace Council was to talk with parts of the Taliban who wanted peace. Their goal was to convince them to stop fighting. They wanted these groups to join the political process peacefully instead.
On July 16, 2011, the United Nations Security Council removed his name from the 1267 list. They also removed the names of thirteen other former Taliban members. This meant the limits on their money were lifted.
Sadly, on May 13, 2012, Arsalan Rahmani Daulat was killed in his car in Kabul.
