What Happens in the Story?
Artemis's New Invention
Artemis Fowl II, who is 13 years old, has built a super-smart computer. He calls it the "C Cube." This computer is made from special fairy technology that Artemis found. It is much more advanced than anything humans have ever created.
Artemis meets a businessman from Chicago, Jon Spiro, in London. Artemis wants to sell the C Cube to Spiro for a lot of gold. But Spiro tricks Artemis and steals the C Cube instead. During the theft, Butler, Artemis's strong bodyguard, is shot by one of Spiro's helpers.
Fairy Help and a Daring Plan
The C Cube accidentally sends out a signal that affects the fairy world underground. This causes all the fairy equipment in Haven City to shut down. Commander Root, a fairy leader, sends Captain Holly Short to London to find out what happened.
Holly quickly finds Artemis. He convinces her to use fairy magic to heal Butler. This special magic saves Butler's life, but it also makes him look about 15 years older. Artemis tells Holly and Foaly, the clever centaur who handles fairy technology, about the C Cube. Holly then takes Artemis and Butler back to Fowl Manor to plan their next move.
The Heist in Chicago
Meanwhile, Jon Spiro hires a group of criminals from Chicago to capture Artemis. He wants Artemis to help him unlock the C Cube's secret "Eternity Code." By chance, one of the people Spiro hires is Mulch Diggums, a dwarf who is also a tunnel expert. Mulch and another tough guy named Loafers go to Fowl Manor.
Mulch is caught, but Loafers is stopped by Juliet, Butler's younger sister. She has just returned home after failing a test at the academy where Butler trained. Commander Root gives Artemis 48 hours to get the C Cube back. Artemis comes up with a clever plan to get the Cube from Spiro's office in Chicago. His plan involves Holly, Mulch, and Juliet.
Root insists that the three humans (Artemis, Holly, and Juliet) must have their memories of the fairy world erased after the mission. So, Artemis leaves Butler in Ireland to make sure their memories are safe.
Getting the C Cube Back
The plan works! Artemis gets the C Cube back by tricking Spiro. He makes Spiro think he needs to steal new products from a rival company. The Chicago police arrive and arrest Spiro and his team. Foaly, the centaur, uses his skills to erase any record of Artemis's actions from the security cameras.
Holly and Juliet help Artemis escape the crime scene. They return to Ireland with Mulch. The person who shot Butler, Arno Blunt, tries to follow them to Ireland to hurt Artemis. But Butler stops him and makes him confess his crimes.
The Memory Trick
Commander Root then prepares to erase the memories of Artemis, Holly, and Juliet. Holly even uses fairy magic to check if Artemis has any hidden memories. However, Artemis has a secret plan. He had Butler create special contact lenses that stop the memory-wiping process.
Artemis reveals that he has hidden files with all his knowledge of the fairy world. His real plan to get his memories back involves Mulch Diggums. Artemis arranges for a small change to a legal document about Mulch, which makes some of Mulch's past arrests invalid. Before his own memory is wiped, Artemis gives Mulch a gold medallion. This medallion is actually a tiny computer disc holding all of Artemis's memories. Even though Mulch is sent to jail, he knows that with Artemis's memories, "together they will be unstoppable."
Secret Message in the Book
In the European versions of the book, there is a secret code on the cover. It says "Think fairy, think again." This was the slogan for the first Artemis Fowl book. This code is not written in the usual fairy languages like Gnommish or Centaurian. It's supposedly written in the "eternity code" that protects the C Cube.
In the hardcover book, another code is printed on the spine under the dustjacket. This code helps readers figure out a message hidden inside the book. The message is from Artemis, asking readers to help him get his memories back by spreading the word: Artemis Fowl must find Mulch Diggums.
Later printings of the book changed the Eternity Code to Gnommish.
