Dr. Artemis Fowl II is the main character of the Artemis Fowl book series by Eoin Colfer. He is a brilliant but mischievous young genius from a wealthy Irish family.

About Artemis Fowl

How the Character Was Created

The author, Eoin Colfer, based Artemis on his younger brother, Donal. As a child, Donal was very clever and could always find a way out of trouble. Colfer once saw a picture of his brother in a suit and thought he looked like a "little James Bond villain." This idea sparked the creation of a twelve-year-old criminal mastermind.

Colfer chose the name Artemis because it's a classic Greek name. Even though it's usually a girl's name, it was sometimes given to boys whose fathers were great hunters. The last name, Fowl, was chosen to sound like "foul," hinting at Artemis's tricky personality early in the series.

Artemis's Adventures

Before the first book, Artemis's father, Artemis Fowl I, lost a lot of the family money. He disappeared after a shipping vessel he was on sank. This caused Artemis's mother, Angeline Fowl, to become very sad.

In the first book, Artemis Fowl, 12-year-old Artemis decides to get the family fortune back. He learns about a secret world of fairies called the People. He tricks a fairy into giving him "the Book," which holds all their secrets. Artemis then kidnaps Lower Elements Police (LEP) Captain Holly Short to get a ransom of fairy gold. They make a deal: Holly gets half the gold, and Artemis gets the other half and one wish. Artemis even outsmarts the LEP when they try to stop him.

In the second book, The Arctic Incident, 13-year-old Artemis finds out his father is alive but held hostage. He teams up with the People to rescue his father. They also work together to stop a goblin rebellion led by the evil pixie Opal Koboi. Artemis saves his father and helps the fairies.

In the third book, The Eternity Code, Artemis builds a super-computer called the C Cube. It's much more advanced than human technology. He tries to make a deal with a businessman, but the man double-crosses him and hurts Butler, Artemis's bodyguard. Artemis, with help from Holly and Foaly (a centaur genius), gets the C Cube back. To keep the fairy world a secret, Artemis, Butler, and Butler's sister Juliet have their memories wiped by the fairies.

In the fourth book, The Opal Deception, Opal Koboi escapes and plans revenge. She frames Holly for a murder and tries to harm Artemis and Butler. Holly rescues Artemis. Later, Mulch Diggums (a dwarf friend) helps Butler get his memories back, and they save Artemis and Holly. Artemis also gets his memories back. Together, they stop Opal from revealing the fairy world to humans.

In the fifth book, The Lost Colony, Artemis works with the fairies to rescue a young demon from another child genius, Minerva Paradizo. During this adventure, Artemis gains a small amount of magic and swaps an eye with Holly. They are also transported nearly three years into the future. Artemis learns he now has twin younger brothers, Beckett and Myles.

In the sixth book, The Time Paradox, Artemis's mother gets very sick with a rare fairy disease. The only cure is from a special lemur that Artemis sold when he was ten, causing it to go extinct. Artemis and Holly travel back in time to save the last lemur. They discover Opal Koboi is behind his mother's illness. Artemis outsmarts Opal by bringing his younger self to the present. His mother is saved, and young Artemis has his memory wiped, but a small part of it remains, leading him to research fairies later.

In the seventh book, The Atlantis Complex, Artemis gets a mental illness called Atlantis Complex, which is like OCD. He develops an alter-ego named Orion, who is very different from Artemis. After some adventures, Artemis gets treatment and returns to his normal self.

In the eighth book, The Last Guardian, Artemis must stop Opal Koboi from destroying humankind. Opal opens a magical gate under Fowl Manor, releasing ancient fairy warriors. Artemis sacrifices himself to stop Opal and the warriors. Because he had some fairy magic, his spirit survives. Holly and Foaly clone a new body for him and bring him back. He loses some memories, but his friends begin to help him get them back.

In The Fowl Twins, Artemis is on a five-year mission to Mars in a rocket he built. He leaves his younger twin brothers, Beckett and Myles, with NANNI, an artificial intelligence he created that sounds like Holly Short.

Artemis's Traits

Appearance

Artemis has pale skin, deep blue eyes, and black hair. He looks a lot like his father. After his adventures in The Lost Colony, he has one blue eye and one hazel eye because he swapped an eye with Holly. His smile is sometimes described as vampire-like. He is not very strong physically and often wears fancy suits. In The Last Guardian, he gets a new body that looks like he did at the start of the series, with two blue eyes.

Personality

At the beginning of the series, Artemis is a difficult character. He often keeps to himself. However, he considers Butler his best friend. As the series goes on, he starts to respect his father, Holly, and Butler more. Holly eventually calls him a friend. Artemis realizes that his adventures and new friendships have changed him for the better. He uses his intelligence to help the People because he feels he owes them. He also misses the challenges their problems bring.

Artemis dislikes lollipops and other desserts. The author wanted to show Artemis growing from a greedy boy into a young man who learns that family is more important than money.

Relationships

Artemis and Holly Short start as enemies but slowly become good friends. By the end of the series, they care deeply for each other. In The Time Paradox, they even share a kiss. Artemis's alter ego, Orion, also shows affection for Holly. In the last book, Artemis kisses Holly on the forehead, showing his feelings for her, and also allowing his DNA to be used for his clone. Later, Artemis creates an artificial intelligence named NANNI, based on Holly, who sees them as her parents.

Artemis cares deeply for his mother, father, and brothers. He also has a strong bond with Domovoi Butler, his bodyguard. He has a friendly rivalry with Foaly, always trying to prove he's smarter. He also has a sort of friendship with Mulch, who helps him get his memories back.

Skills and Abilities

Artemis is a child genius with a very high IQ. He is known for being a great planner and schemer. He can imagine situations and figure out what will happen. His teachers know he is smarter than them in many subjects. He has written articles for psychology journals and given lectures. He also has several patents. Artemis is talented in music, can speak several languages (including Gnommish, Spanish, Russian, and French), and can read lips. He is also good at spotting and creating fake documents.

Artemis can type incredibly fast. He is ambidextrous, meaning he can use both hands well. He has perfect pitch, which means he can identify musical notes perfectly. He is also a trained pilot and can ride horses.

For a while, Artemis had a small amount of magic from his travels between dimensions. This magic gave him some fairy traits, like feeling sick when entering a building uninvited. He lost this magic trying to heal his mother.

When he is his alter-ego, Orion, Artemis shows more physical skill than his usual self. He can perform moves he learned from Butler that Artemis normally couldn't.

Artemis's Possessions

Artemis uses many valuable items for his plans. These include his advanced computers and the fairy equipment he collected from the first book. One of his most treasured items is a fairy coin given to him by Holly Short. She shot a hole through it to remind him that he has a "spark of decency." Holly also gave him a fairy communicator disguised as a ring.

Artemis owns Fowl Manor, a large castle on 200 acres. He also has a Learjet, a Bentley Arnage Red Label car, a Sikorsky helicopter, and a solar-powered Cessna aircraft. He values his collection of Impressionist art very highly.

Artemis is very wealthy. He stole about $15 million worth of gold from the fairies in the first book. In the third book, he took about $300 million from a villain named Jon Spiro, donating most of it to charity. He has appeared on the Forbes Fictional 15 list of richest fictional characters several times.
