Foaly is a super smart centaur character from the popular Artemis Fowl book series by Eoin Colfer. He works as the main technology expert for the Lower Elements Police (LEP), which is like the fairy world's police force. Foaly invents almost all the cool gadgets and advanced tech that the fairies use. He thinks he's a genius who doesn't get enough credit, and he loves to research conspiracy theories!
We don't know much about Foaly's early life. He seems older than LEP Captain Holly Short. In the first book, Artemis Fowl, it's mentioned that Foaly had been designing transport pods for over 100 years. Holly Short, who is in her eighties, says this in Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony. Foaly is married to another centaur named Caballine. We find out they were dating during a time jump in Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony.
Foaly's Personality
Foaly is one of the smartest characters in the Artemis Fowl series. Only Opal Koboi can really match his intelligence. He makes sure everyone, especially the "People" (or Fairies), knows how smart he is!
Foaly loves to keep an eye on humans and their technology. He enjoys explaining his amazing inventions to others. He's also very interested in conspiracy theories. He can be quite paranoid about them, sometimes even wearing a tinfoil hat! He also likes human soap operas, western movies, and Star Wars. He calls anything that doesn't need his "genius mind" and that a "normal person" can do "grunt work." For example, in the second book, his boss, Commander Root, tells him to take apart a shuttle, and Foaly isn't happy about it.
In The Artemis Fowl Files, Foaly mentions he's started line dancing. In Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony, he sometimes sings "Riverbend" songs when he's working under pressure. He also likes watching videos or reading articles about himself, which shows his centaur pride. He has a big rivalry with Opal Koboi. This started because he won a university science fair with his iris-cam, even though Opal thought her Koboi wings were much better. She even accused him of winning just because he was a male.
Foaly is a very good friend to Holly Short. He often stands by her and helps her out of tough spots. He also has a friendly rivalry with Artemis Fowl II. He often jokes that he'd love to open up Artemis's brain to see what makes him so clever!
Foaly's Role in the Books
Foaly plays a very important part in the Artemis Fowl series.
First Book: Artemis Fowl
In the first book, Artemis Fowl, Foaly's main jobs are setting up electronics, doing research, and providing some funny moments. He also enjoys annoying Commander Root. Foaly was the only fairy who thought that Artemis Fowl II might be one step ahead of the LEP, and he was right!
Second Book: The Arctic Incident
In the second book, Foaly is framed by a former LEP commander, Briar Cudgeon, and the clever pixie, Opal Koboi. They wrongly accuse Foaly of helping a goblin group called the B'wa Kell to destroy the LEP. But Foaly uses Artemis's laptop, which was left in his lab, to contact Artemis, Butler, Root, and Holly for help. He finds proof that Cudgeon was planning to betray Opal. This makes the villains turn on each other, saving the day!
Third Book: The Eternity Code
In the third book, Foaly recognizes an emergency call and sends Holly to investigate. He then guides her through a difficult healing process that saves Butler's life. Later, he secretly helps Artemis by giving him fairy technology to use against a bad guy named Jon Spiro. He even pretends to be the voice of the C Cube to trick Spiro.
Fourth Book: The Opal Deception
In the fourth book, Foaly figures out that Commander Julius Root was killed by Opal Koboi, not Holly Short, even though the video footage made it look that way. He uses his invention, the Retimager, to see what a comatose Opal clone last saw. He discovers she saw herself, proving she was a clone. This evidence helps convince the LEPrecon to search for Holly Short, who was thought to be dead and responsible for Root's death. Foaly helped prove she was framed.
Fifth Book: The Lost Colony
In the fifth book, Foaly helps sneak into the Paradizo estate to rescue the kidnapped demon, N°1. He is also the one who first finds information about the Paradizos, even though they had erased all proof of their existence. Foaly gets married during the three years that Holly and Artemis are gone in The Lost Colony.
Sixth Book: The Time Paradox
Foaly isn't in most of the sixth book because it takes place in the past. But he is there at the beginning when he helps figure out what's wrong with Artemis's mother and finds the cure. He also appears at the end, calling the LEP to protect Fowl Manor from Opal Koboi.
Seventh Book: Atlantis Complex
In the seventh book, Foaly is trapped with Artemis and Holly when they are attacked by Turnball Root. Foaly quickly gets annoyed with 'Orion,' a second personality Artemis developed from touching magic. He also talks about getting a video game console for 'the kids,' which suggests he and Caballine are parents to at least two centaur children.
Last Book: The Last Guardian
In the final book, Foaly helps Artemis save the world by sending him the clone of Opal Koboi (who is also called Nopal). Caballine is targeted by Opal's forces, and while she fights well, Foaly is needed to save her. Foaly later creates a clone of Artemis to be a body for Artemis's ghost, which ends up saving Artemis's life. The book also reveals how Foaly and Caballine first met.
