Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex is the seventh exciting book in the Artemis Fowl series. It was released on July 20, 2010, in the United Kingdom. Readers in North America got it a bit later, on August 3, 2010. This book sets the stage for the very last adventure in the series, Artemis Fowl and the Last Guardian.

What Happens in the Story?

Artemis's New Invention and a Strange Sickness

The story begins in Vatnajökull, a huge glacier in Iceland. Here, the super-smart Artemis shows off his latest invention: the Ice Cube. This device is meant to help stop global warming. It works by shooting tiny reflective pieces into clouds. These pieces then fall with the snow and reflect sunlight, helping to keep icebergs cool.

Artemis is with his fairy friends, Captain Holly Short, and Foaly, a clever centaur. He also has Wing Commander Vinyáya with them. But something is wrong with Artemis. He speaks very slowly, counting his words. Holly and Foaly quickly realize he has something called Atlantis Complex. This is a special fairy sickness. It makes people act very organized and particular (like OCD). It also makes them feel like others are against them (paranoia). Sometimes, they might even have different personalities.

An Unexpected Attack

While outside, Artemis's special scanners pick up a strange flying object. Foaly confirms it's real. Suddenly, Artemis gets very confused and upset. He starts accusing Foaly of trying to steal his invention. Holly tries to calm him down with her fairy magic, but it doesn't work.

Then, a mysterious spacecraft attacks them! Foaly actually designed this ship to look for life on Mars. The ship crashes, hitting another shuttle. Sadly, Commander Vinyáya and all the fairy guards are lost. This leaves Holly, Foaly, and Artemis stuck on the glacier. They have no way to talk to anyone and no weapons.

Butler and Juliet's Adventure

Meanwhile, Artemis's strong bodyguard, Butler, is in Mexico. Artemis, in his confused state, tricked Butler into going to Cancún. He told Butler that his sister, Juliet, was in danger. Juliet is now a wrestler known as "Jade Princess."

Butler and Juliet soon find themselves in trouble. A large group of wrestling fans, who are acting like zombies, attack them. But Butler and Juliet are tough and manage to escape.

Turnball Root's Plan

Next, we meet Turnball Root. He is the brother of the late Julius Root, a fairy commander. Turnball hires a group of dwarfs to capture Butler and Juliet. But they are stopped by the clever dwarf, Mulch Diggums.

Mulch, Butler, and Juliet then work together. They rescue Artemis, Holly, and Foaly. All six of them start chasing Turnball. However, Turnball manages to catch them. He puts a special curse on Holly and Artemis, making them his servants.

The Final Showdown

Turnball's main goal is to kidnap No. 1, a powerful fairy. He wants No. 1 to use magic to make his wife, Leonor, young again. But Artemis has an alter ego, another personality, named Orion. Orion is not affected by Turnball's curse. Orion bravely saves No.1 and Holly.

Turnball has set up a shuttle to explode. Leonor decides she doesn't want to be young again. She only wants to fly one last time. So, she and Turnball Root ride the shuttle deep into the ocean, where it explodes.

Aftermath and Recovery

After all the excitement, Artemis is back to his usual self, though still very particular and organized. He is taken on a transport shuttle to the Argon clinic for therapy. This is an underwater hospital.

In the hospital's gym, Juliet is having a wrestling match with a huge pixie guard. She's pretending to lose, but she's really just playing along. Artemis and Foaly are teasing Holly about a recent date she had.

Butler calls Angeline Fowl, Artemis's mother. He tells her that Artemis has a fairy disease, similar to OCD. Angeline is very worried and upset. But Butler helps her feel better. He then walks into the gym, knowing Juliet is just having fun with her wrestling match.

The Next Book

This book is the second-to-last in the Artemis Fowl series. The eighth and final book, The Last Guardian, was released in 2012.
